Therapeutic Potential of Honey Against Hepatotoxicity and Renal Toxicity: Insight into Its Mechanisms of Action

Honey, a natural sweet substance produced by bees, has been recognized for its potential therapeutic properties. In current years, there has been mounting interest in exploring the therapeutic potential of honey in protecting against hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity. Hepatotoxicity, which refers to liver damage caused by various toxins, and renal toxicity, characterized by kidney injury induced by nephrotoxic agents, are significant health concerns worldwide. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the therapeutic potential of honey in mitigating hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity. Honey exhibits several beneficial properties that contribute to its protective effects on the liver and kidneys. It possesses effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help decrease oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid peroxidation, thereby preserving liver and kidney function. Experimental studies using animal models have demonstrated that honey supplementation can attenuate liver and kidney injury, enhance the antioxidant defence system, and mitigate the toxic effects of hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic agents. In conclusion, honey holds promise as a natural therapeutic agent against hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity. Future research endeavors should provide a comprehensive understanding of honey’s therapeutic potential, ultimately facilitating its integration into clinical practice for preventing and managing liver and kidney diseases.
