Therapeutic Applications of Honey: Traditional and Contemporary Approaches in Human Health Management
摘要
Honey has been used in traditional medicinal systems for millennia. Even in modern times, honey continues to be a subject of interest in medical and pharmaceutical research. The diverse therapeutic qualities of honey, including its ability to promote wound healing, combat microbial infections, reduce inflammation and act as an antioxidant, have been extensively recorded in the extensive historical records of human civilization. In the wake of advancements in modern medicine, honey has been meticulously investigated to comprehensively understand its potential therapeutic benefits in various human diseases. Higher phytochemical levels in honey are responsible for conferring antimicrobial activities, anticancer properties, antidiabetic effects, cardiovascular disease prevention capabilities, etc. Furthermore, honey has shown promise in treating allergic reactions and tissue regeneration, thereby rendering it a valuable natural remedy in modern medicine. As a modality within the domain of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), honey has garnered acknowledgement and approval for its safe and efficacious utilisation in addressing diverse health maladies. The juxtaposition of its historical usage and contemporary applications in managing human diseases is noteworthy. This book chapter highlights the multifaceted role of honey in promoting human health, thereby bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern scientific validation.
