Millennial Generation and Political Communication Tolerance in Indonesian Election 2024

The 2024 Indonesian election is very important for Indonesia's future toward a Golden Indonesia 2045. Apart from that, the 2024 election will present new president–vice-president candidates. None of them was present as incumbents. Electoral political participation is very strategic for Indonesia, which has a large population, namely 276 million in 2022. Among the Indonesian population are millennials who are expected to take part in political communication as a form of political participation. Political communication that needs attention is tolerance for differences and diversity. Difference and diversity are the birth mother of Indonesia which was proclaimed by the founding fathers of the nation. Activities by communicating political tolerance, it is hoped that the public can respect each other, respect, and allow differences in choices, whether religious, school, mate, or political choices. In the 2024 elections, political communication regarding tolerance is important because of the experience in the 2014 and 2019 elections between supporters of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, giving rise to the idiom “Cebong” for supporters of Jokowi-Makruf Amin, and “Kampret” for supporters of Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno. This is where millennials are important in the era of digital democracy where the use of social media and electronic media is very important. This article uses a political communication approach in analysis, so that political events are seen in relation to one event and another as a social series.
