Analysis of Monthly Attenuation Between Airborne Platform and Earth Station at Ku and Ka-Bands in Southwest Region in Nigeria

The study investigated the analysis of monthly attenuation between an airborne platform and earth station for Southwest region at Ku/Ka-band using meteorological data retrieved from the archive of GPM ranging from 2014 to 2021. The parameters used for the estimation of the monthly attenuation for the selected locations in the Southwest regions of Nigeria are the transmitted power, transmitted antenna gain, received antenna gain, and feeder losses. From the analysis, the results showed that, at Ku-band, the maximum and minimum attenuation occurred in Oyo state with a value of 0.9723 dB in the month of November in the year 2015 and 0.1785 dB in the month of January in the year 2016, respectively. However, at Ka-band, the peak and least attenuation were recorded in Lagos state with a value of 1.4723 dB and 0.0090 dB, in the month of September and July and in the year 2016 and 2015, respectively. In conclusion, Ka-band is the best frequency band for sitting and planning radio wave transmission for Lagos state, Southwest region of Nigeria with the lowest attenuation of signals transmitted between the airborne platform and ground station.
