A Review on Crack Detection Using Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence

Every country has its history, culture and tradition to share with the world. Ancient paintings are priceless artifacts, that shed light on a culture's origins for future generations. In antique paintings, there are a variety of materials that make it difficult to detect cracks on it. Traditional crack detection methods have limitations in performance due to their poor adaptability to high-resolutions and the absence of readily available imaging modalities. As many paintings display a chaotic or intricate composition, using only photographic evidence might be challenging. With the assistance of modern technologies like artificial intelligence, it is possible to locate and fix the flaws in this priceless historical painting. In this paper, we will be reviewing such different machine learning and deep learning artificial intelligent methods which can detect cracks in paintings. We will also summarize the research done to date and will discuss gaps and challenges in the existing research.
