Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria: A Role Toward Sustainability in the Agricultural Systems

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth and is a key component of agricultural fertilizers. However, the inefficient use of phosphate fertilizers in modern farming practices has led to numerous environmental concerns, including water pollution and resource depletion. To address these challenges, the utilization of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) has emerged as a promising and sustainable approach in agricultural systems. There is a pivotal role of PSB in promoting sustainable agriculture as PSB possess the unique ability to convert insoluble inorganic phosphates into a plant-available form, improving phosphorus uptake by crops. By enhancing nutrient use efficiency, PSB can reduce the overreliance on synthetic fertilizers, minimizing their environmental impact, and conserving nonrenewable phosphate resources. Moreover, PSB contribute to soil health by increasing microbial diversity and improving soil structure, thus supporting overall ecosystem sustainability. This chapter provides insight into the mechanisms of phosphate solubilization, its role in managing phosphorus deficiency, and its applications in enhancing crop productivity. It also discusses the potential of PSB to mitigate environmental concerns associated with phosphate fertilizer use, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for agricultural systems. Understanding the role of PSB is essential for optimizing their use and ensuring the long-term sustainability of global agriculture.
