Unveiling the Sulfur Surge: Assessing Global Freshwater Contamination and Innovating Sustainable Bioremediation Strategies
摘要
In the face of escalating human impact on global freshwater systems, this research review addresses the critical concern of rising sulfur (S) contaminations, notably in untreated sewage water. The paradoxical surge in sulfur contaminant occurs amid decreasing atmospheric sulfur (S) deposition, presenting a complex environmental challenge. Focusing on multifaceted pathways of sulfur contamination, this review explores the consequences and potential solutions to this intricate issue. Key sulfur pollutants discussed include sulfate, sulfur oxides (SO2), acids of sulfur (H2SO4), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and sulfide. The impact of sulfate contamination extends beyond visible water surfaces, affecting ecosystem structure and functioning. High sulfate concentrations result from industrial activities like paper mills and fertilizer production, posing challenges in wastewater treatment. Sulfur and its derivatives emerge as detrimental pollutants affecting plant and animal life. The review emphasizes the need for a nuanced understanding of reduction methodologies, with a spotlight on bioremediation. Bioremediation approaches, encompassing physical, chemical, and biological methods, prove crucial in mitigating sulfur contamination. Sulfur-reducing bacteria, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, and algal–bacterial consortia demonstrate promise in curbing sulfate concentrations. The review highlights the importance of considering factors like osmotic pressure and temperature fluctuations for effective bioremediation. Nature’s symbiotic capacity offers hope for sustainable solutions, encouraging exploration of novel relationships between organisms to reduce sulfur contaminants. Recombinant DNA technology, sulfur-reducing bacteria, and other innovative methods are discussed as potential approaches for mitigating sulfur pollution. In conclusion, the research review contributes comprehensive insights into the dynamic landscape of sulfur contamination in freshwater systems. It emphasizes the ongoing quest to align technological advancements with sustainable practices, fostering a cleaner and healthier environment. The integration of bioremediation strategies and a deeper understanding of sulfur contaminants pave the way for effective environmental management.
