From Ignorance to Concern: Highlighting New Pollutants in Sewage Sludge

Traditional methods of handling wastewater have historically taken precedence over the intricate management of sewage sludge. However, recent advancements in analytical techniques have unveiled the presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) within sewage sludge, shedding light on their potential environmental impact. Scientific literature from recent years has unequivocally reported the existence of these contaminants. This study seeks to investigate the various facets of these EPs comprehensively. Their existence poses a significant threat to both ecosystems and human health encompassing industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and micro plastics. The inquiry commences by outlining historical practices in sewage sludge treatment, emphasizing pathogen removal and nutrient reclamation. Furthermore, the study delves into the intricate nature of this issue by examining the diverse origins of these pollutants, spanning from agricultural runoff to contributions from industrial and household sources. Analyzing the environmental fate and dispersion of these emerging contaminants within sewage sludge offers valuable insights into potential soil, water, and air contamination. Despite this exploration, the study also underscores the inadequacies of current regulatory frameworks and the pressing need for innovative technologies to manage and mitigate the impact of these EPs.
