摘要

The combination of phototrophy and diazotrophy in prokaryotic microorganisms, cyanobacteria, has resulted in their promising use in various biotechnological applications including biofertilization, bioremediation and as sources of many industrially and commercially useful products. However, this chapter reviews the various developments and research leading to the cyanoremediation of metal ions from the environment. Details of how abiotic factors can be adjusted to get optimum metal removal, the thermodynamics of cyanobacteria–metal interaction, cell surface chemical entities involved in this interaction, the order of such adsorption kinetics, energy considerations, tolerance to metal ions etc. are discussed in this chapter.
