Microalgae: Nature’s Green Gold and Their Potential to Meet Sustainable Development Goals

With the ongoing surge in population growth, there is a corresponding escalation in demands for food, water and energy which has led to an intensified exploitation of natural resources. This necessitates innovative and sustainable solutions that ensure the long-term resilience of our ecosystem. Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms having the ability to thrive in diverse habitats and synthesize their own food. They have an efficiency advantage of nutrient utilization, and grow more rapidly compared to conventional plants. Microalgae are considered as nature’s green energy reserve due to their high content of carbohydrates and lipids. These tiny powerhouses hold the potential towards resource-efficient food and fuel production. Hence, making them a potential renewable resource in addressing a spectrum of global challenges, including food security and CO2 mitigation by CO2 fixation and wastewater bioremediation. Microalgae-derived bioactive compounds find applications in diverse industries from biofuels, bioremediating agents, food ingredients, biopharmaceuticals, biofertilizers and bioplastics. Use of wastewaters offers a practical and viable pathway for sustainable production of biofuels and as sourcing nutrients for biomass production. Algaculture offers a strategic approach towards sustainable resource utilization and shaping the future bioeconomy.
