Analysis of Hospital Occupancy for COVID-19 Patients Using Erlang B Queueing System

A queue in health facilities happened when the service capacity is limited, while the patients keep arriving and then waiting. In many cases, besides waiting, customers can be rejected from the system (balking). This case was considered as the cause of the daily positive cases of COVID-19 patients in Arcamanik Sub City Area (SCA). This observation was conducted from September 17, 2020 to February 4, 2021. Arcamanik SCA was frequently included in one of the highest positive cases of COVID-19 in Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. The server used was the number of beds in Hermina Arcamanik Hospital, the referral hospital in the observed area. The method used a discrete event simulation, with an Erlang B queuing model (G/M/c):(FIFO/c/∞). The more the servers, the more chances the patients being rejected would converge to zero. The minimum required bed was 32 beds, hence patients who come were not rejected. Meanwhile, the rejected patients can visit another hospital as an alternative, one of which is Hasan Sadikin hospital (Rumah Sakit Hasan Sadikin/RSHS) as the central hospital of Bandung City. The proportion of beds for patients from Arcamanik SCA was 0.16 times the excess empty beds. For patients to receive treatment at the two hospitals, the number of COVID-19 cases must not exceed 62 cases.
