Biofortification Techniques: Breeding, Agronomic and Biotechnological Approaches

Commencing with a global perspective, it is evident that approximately one-third of the world’s population grapples with malnutrition or hidden hunger caused by micronutrient deficiencies. This critical issue not only undermines economic progress but also poses significant challenges to overall well-being. In response, a transformative approach is needed within the next decade. Over the next decade, embracing biofortification is poised to drive substantial progress and holds promise for addressing these challenges. Beyond simply enhancing the nutritional value of our food, biofortification reduces the reliance on external supplements required to attain optimal nutritional density. The advancement of nutrient-rich crop production is being propelled by various methodologies, including agronomic strategies, transgenic methods, molecular breeding, and conventional plant breeding. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 (UN-SDG2) to eradicate all forms of hunger by 2030, this endeavor represents a pivotal step towards a healthier, more sustainable future. However, given the pressing timeline and the profound implications of hunger on socioeconomic well-being and global health, achieving success demands concerted efforts. Biofortification, when coupled with dietary diversification and nutrition education, has the potential to eliminate micronutrient malnutrition and enhance global human health significantly. This exertion, complemented by enlightening initiatives, stands as a fundamental strategy to curb population growth, elevate living standards, and foster global peace.
