摘要

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are peptides that have garnered significant attention owing to numerous applications across different industries. This article therefore provides an overview of the crucial role AMPs play in these domains. In agriculture, AMPs are harnessed to improve crop and livestock health, combat diseases, and enhance productivity. AMPs have been proven to stimulate plant growth, mitigate the effects of drought and salt stress, and protect against various pathogen as applying AMPs in animal husbandry promotes immunity in livestock, increasing milk production in cows and reducing mortality rates in poultry and swine. Moreover, AMPs show promise in the broader biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, their unique ability to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria and fight various infections has led to their utilization as a potential solution to the global antibiotic resistance crisis. AMPs can be utilized in food preservation and also into delivery systems that enhance their antibacterial efficacy and stability, thus enabling their use in diverse applications. Despite their significant potential, AMPs face safety, regulations, and manufacturing costs challenges. Regulatory agencies are still developing guidelines for these novel molecules and concerns about potential resistance mechanisms in pathogenic bacteria are being raised. Nevertheless, ongoing research is addressing these obstacles, and innovative strategies are emerging to harness the full potential of AMPs. With the right approach, AMPs have the potential to revolutionize agriculture and become an essential tool in the fight against antibiotic-resistant diseases while opening new doors for biotechnological and pharmaceutical advancements.
