Traditional Phytotherapy Practices Among Diverse Tribal Communities in India
摘要
Traditional phytotherapy has been a key constituent of healthcare practices in various tribal communities of India for centuries. These tribal communities have an incredible knowledge about the medicinal properties of local plants, which is traditionally passed down through generations. Several organizations and research institutions in India are actively working to study and document the traditional tribal medicinal system, so that this valuable knowledge can be imbibed and integrated with the modern healthcare system and can be further used for human welfare. Efforts are also being made to ensure that the rights and interests of tribal communities are respected and protected in the context of herbal medicinal research and development. In the present chapter, a systematic compilation of the traditional knowledge and practices among the various tribes in India has been attempted. As traditional phytotherapy is facing a wide range of challenges, therefore, there is an urgent need for standardization, safety assessments and documentation of traditional herbal remedies throughout India to further safeguard the well-being of human society. The storm of modernization, urbanization and uncontrolled deforestation has dragged the future of our traditional knowledge and healthcare practices towards high risk and if proper measures are not taken timely, we can lose our heritage in near future. Loss of traditional heritage will have a greater impact on the biodiversity, which can be very alarming for a developing country like India. Moreover, it has also been observed that whatever exists is confined only to the older generation. Thus, there is an urgent need to conserve and pass on this traditional knowledge to future generations. The Government of India should take initiatives and allocate more funds and opportunities for research in this field, and the young tribal generations should be motivated to inherit this traditional knowledge for the well-being of their society throughout the country. This will also help to conserve different therapeutic remedies along with the local plant diversity in different parts of India. Thus, we can conclude that traditional phytotherapy plays a pivotal role not only in preserving the cultural heritage but it also strengthens the healthcare system of various tribal peoples throughout India. It offers an accessible, holistic and sustainable healthcare approach towards the indigenous knowledge of local plants along with their medicinal properties. Traditional phytotherapy still needs authentic compilation and validation through systematic research which will further help to evaluate not only the efficiency but also the potential side effects of the medicinal plants used by different local tribals. Finally, to fully harness the potentials of traditional phytotherapy, efforts should be made to integrate it with modern healthcare systems while respecting and preserving the rich traditions of tribal communities.
