A Comparative Study on Stability of Kootickal Slopes During 2021 Landslide by Means of GeoStudio and Plaxis 2D

摘要

A landslide occurs when a mass of rock, debris, or earth slides down a slope under the influence of gravity. In the current study, Kootickal of Kottayam district has been selected where landslides and heavy floods occurred in 2021 due to a torrential downpour triggered by the formation of a low depression zone in the Arabian Sea. In the current study, an analysis was performed using two different software packages (GeoStudio and Plaxis 2D), and stability characteristics were observed. Each software implements standards and partial factors differently and is used worldwide, so a comparison is necessary. The present study also discusses an analysis of software results and mitigation methods for reducing landslides. In order to determine whether a slope is stable against sliding, it is necessary to compare the software's output factor of safety with standards. Based on the analysis, the slope failed due to a reduction in the shear strength parameter of the soil due to water infiltration.
