After regaining independent gait, additional training can be performed through the use of dual-task training, training with obstacles, incorporating other movements during gait, changing the base of support, altering sensory input, and reactive balance training. Starting stair training before mastering the step-up and step-down may lead to learned nonuse of the affected lower limb and abnormal joint motion due to the greater height of stairs (which are typically higher than 10 cm) compared to steps (around 7.5 cm). Since training effects diminish with time, a program aimed at maintaining function is absolutely necessary. Since gait training is a lifelong process, easy and cost-effective strategies are essential. Many people who use walking aids can increase muscle strength and balance through training, reducing their dependency on canes or other walking aids or even eliminating the need for them entirely.
