Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Sustainability Assessments of Fishing Vessels Operating in the Adriatic Sea

Global warming, primarily driven by elevated levels of anthropogenic Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere, poses a significant environmental challenge. Fossil fuel combustion is the primary source of GHGs, along with emissions like nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur oxides (SOX), and particulate matter (PM). Fishing vessels play a role in emitting harmful gases within the seafood production chain, with the fishing sector consuming 1.2% of the world's oil supply, resulting in 134 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) seeks to address environmental and economic challenges in fisheries by providing regulations and strategies to improve economic performance and reduce environmental impact. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are quantifiable metrics used to measure progress and performance in various sectors and Fishery Performance Indicators (FPIs) are specific metrics used to assess and measure the effectiveness, sustainability, and social acceptance of fisheries and the fishing industry. This study compares and analyzes FPIs for fishing vessels operating in the Adriatic Sea, focusing on purse seiners and trawlers, and calculating and evaluating their environmental, economic and social performance.
