Focusing Properties of Dual-Ring and Square Arrays

Array antennas have been extensively used for the design of focused antennas. Various configurations of the focused arrays have been investigated. In this contribution, a comparison is made between a recently proposed dual-ring focused array and the conventional square array. The two arrays were designed and simulated using the CST software, at a size of six wavelengths, and the obtained results are compared regarding parameters like the number of required phase shifters, and the size of the focal spot. The dual-ring array offered a smaller depth of field, with a smaller number of elements and a single phase shifter, while the conventional square array showed a smaller transversal size of the focused spot, and needed larger number of phase shifters.
