Self-hosted Open-Source Dependency Management Solutions

The majority of various sizes of enterprises rely on open-source dependencies in the software development process. This reliance is associated with risks, such as public dependency management platform outages, which might result in downtimes in business processes. To tackle this challenge, it is possible to manage a private dependency management system within the company. A variety of such solutions exist with ranging capabilities and properties. Within this work, we analyzed solutions that support the dependencies of the selected languages out of the current top 10 TIOBE index, namely Python, JavaScript, Java, C#, C++, and PHP. Overall, we have discovered 13 solutions that support dependency management for one or multiple of these languages, out of which 11 have native cloud support, 10 are open-source, eight support Single Sign On, and four support multiple programming languages. We also note the potential of using containerization to tackle the challenges of managing open-source dependencies.
