Plant Identification and Disease Detection System Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Plant nursery is a place where plants are propagated, fostered, cultivated, and sold for use in a personal garden or for commercial purposes. Improved quality seedlings are grown under favorable conditions until they are ready for planting on a small or large scale. Whenever people want to buy plants, they visit the plant nursery. The nurseries must be able to assist with all types of enquiries regarding plants and purchases. Sometimes people do not have certain information about plants and it may happen that the seller also cannot give exact information regarding plants. Similarly, it is a complicated task to detect the diseases occurring on plants with human eyes. Therefore, there is a need to develop a system to detect the diseases occurring in plants reducing manual efforts. In such a scenario, developing a mobile application can help customers to identify a plant, get information about plants, buy plants, and detect plant diseases using plant images. Therefore, the system takes an input image of a plant leaf, performs processing operations on it, and using deep convolutional neural network it helps to identify a plant and detect disease if any. The model of the proposed system is trained with a large dataset of plant leaf images of different species of plants and the diseases affecting them. The trained model is then used to develop an android application which is quite user-friendly. Thus, the developed mobile application is user-friendly and very useful in identifying plants and detecting diseases by just clicking an image of the plant using mobile.
