Internet of Things for Mangrove Rehabilitation: Invited Paper

This article investigates the novel application of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to mangrove rehabilitation, a significant effort to restore these vital coastal ecosystems and reach the net zero global target. Our study explores the challenges of restoring mangrove forests, including environmental changes and socio-economic barriers. They include fluctuating salinity and water levels, challenges with logistics and the need for community involvement. Although sensors have been used in earlier research to track environmental variables in mangrove forests, there needs to be more research on the precise use of IoT technology to restore these ecosystems, which require different cares differently to mature forests. Our methodology proposes IoT to improve decision-making in mangrove rehabilitation projects via real-time data collecting, remote monitoring and sending alerts for timely response to address issues that arise. This approach has the potential to completely transform conventional rehabilitation techniques by more effectively addressing critical environmental issues.
