Geoinformatics and Land Surveying Steering the New Urban Agenda in Zimbabwe

The world is progressively becoming interconnected and technologically dependent. Smart applications have changed approaches to everyday activities. Smart cities require data acquired through modern intelligent technology, to achieve urban sustainability. This chapter aims to explore the role of geoinformatics and surveying in advancing the New Urban Agenda (NUA) in Zimbabwe. A qualitative research design focusing mainly on the Zimbabwean case was adopted. Desktop study was mainly used, complemented by data on government and other agencies’ tender notices for geoinformatics and surveying services and products. The data was then discussed according to relevant paragraphs of the NUA document. From the discussions, the geoinformatics and surveying role of establishing Zimbabwe’s national coordinate system and geodetic control network provides a base for collection, integration and efficient communication of geospatial information required for urban development. The cadastral survey role is critical in developing the national cadastre and title Registration system critical in tenure security. Provision of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and orthophotos from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has enabled more detailed and accurate plans and engineering designs for the provision of housing, social amenities and infrastructure. Fit for purpose land administration principles supported by enabling legislation were recommended for dealing with informal settlements.
