An Introduction to Sunscreens
摘要
Specific UV filters in sunscreen formulations provide coverage in specific parts of the solar spectrum. An understanding of this spectral protection enables the formulation of sunscreens with adequate subparts that provide comprehensive coverage, when combined together. In addition, for sunscreen formulations, the nonfiltering components of the product also contribute to the final SPF output, influencing the levels of sun protection obtained. Furthermore, different product types such as sprays, sticks, and wipes all have different implications in terms of both safety and efficacy. An understanding of the newer developments in formulation type, filter approvals in different geographical conditions, and the impact of chemical interactions between different ingredients in the final formulation, enable the physician in making the appropriate recommendations for specific use cases.
