Physical Photoprotection

Sunscreens are one of the most commonly used photoprotection measures world over, for preventing photocarcinogenesis in lighter-skinned individuals, protecting against photopigmentation in darker skin types and for preventing photoageing globally. However, this should not undermine the ability of agents like clothing as the prototype of physical sun protection, in providing near complete protection against sunlight. Clothing like denim is able to provide photoprotection with the best spectral homeostasis possible, as demonstrated by the high critical wavelengths achieved. The UPF rating is helpful to understand the ability of the garment to protect from sun and is impacted by factors such as wetness, weave, and stretch. Physical filtering agents like glass and personal protective equipment like hats and sunglasses are also discussed as means of providing holistic sun protection, and also as ways to reduce sunscreen dependence and sunscreen load on the environment.
