Transforming Machining Technology with Cryogenics: Advancements and Innovations

摘要

The aim of this paper is to provide a review of existing literature done on application of cryogenics on machining technology and the cryogenic treatment of cutting tools which has been found to improve their performance by increasing their wear resistance and extending their tool life. In machining technology, cryogenics has emerged as a cutting-edge method for cooling and lubricating the cutting tool during the machining process. By using liquid nitrogen or other cryogenic gases to cool the cutting tool, cryogenic machining can improve cutting performance, reduce tool wear, increase tool life, and improve surface finish, accuracy, and precision. Additionally, cryogenic machining can help to reduce the risk of thermal damage and distortion, especially when working with difficult-to-machine materials. This enhances the tool’s hardness and wear resistance, making it more durable and efficient. Cryogenically treated tools have been found to last up to four times longer than untreated tools, reducing the need for frequent tool replacement, and increasing productivity.
