Proteomics in Fisheries and Aquaculture

摘要

Aquaculture is predicted to increase faster than other leading food production industries. It is also a central food-producing area contributing to food and nutritional security. Fish is essential to human nutrition, accounting for at least 20% of protein consumption for one-third of the world population. Aquaculture has encountered numerous challenges in achieving sustainable fish production due to its increasing importance. As a result, many omics technologies such as genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics have been introduced to address various difficulties in fisheries. During the recent decade, there has also been an increase in the use of these Omics technologies in aquaculture. Advancements in proteomic techniques can help solve several concerns in aquaculture, such as growth, disease resistance, climate change, and aqua food safety and quality. This study evaluates basic and advanced proteomics technology and their potential use in tackling critical issues in aquaculture. Various proteomics approaches are explained, as well as existing bioinformatic resources and examples of their use in multiple areas of fisheries about safety, quality, and health. Proteomics can potentially be a valuable technique for analyzing the proteomes of any fish or food product. Through a comprehensive evaluation, this method enables the analysis of various traits of fish and the discovery of molecular indicators for their health, promoting sustainable fish growth and thus enhancing the quality and safety of aquatic food.
