Enhanced Growth of Plantlets on Medium Containing Cobalt Nanoparticles

This chapter provides some of the positive effects of cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) on the growth and development of plantlets in vitro. Vitrification in micropropagated carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus “Express golem”) and gerbera leaf yellowing (Gerbera jamesonii “Revolution yellow”) were overcome when CoNPs were added into the culture medium at appropriate concentrations. CoNPs at a concentration of 4.65 μg/L were suitable for carnation and gerbera shoot multiplication, helping to increase shoot multiplication efficiency and improve shoot quality. At the rooting stage, adding 4.65–6.20 μg/L of CoNPs to the medium helped overcome vitreous phenomenon; growth and development indicators such as plant height, number of roots, root length, dry matter ratio (TLCK), and chlorophyll a and b and ethylene gas concentrations in the culture vessel were all optimal. CoNPs inhibited the activity and biosynthesis of ethylene gas and improved carnation seedling quality; therefore, seedlings are derived from in vitro cultures supplemented with CoNPs for adaptability, and the survival rate at the nursery stage was higher than that of the control not treated with metal nanoparticles.
