Rare and Endangered Halophytes: Biodiversity, Economic Importance, and Strategies for Their Conservation

摘要

The ecological balance of arid and coastal ecosystems is fundamentally dependent on halophytes, plants that have evolved to live in salty environments. However, because of habitat loss, climate change, and human activity, many halophyte species are presently threatened. This chapter examines the value of salty coastal ecosystems, focusing especially on salt marshes, mangroves and drylands, and the current state of threatened halophytes. The ecological importance of halophytes and their economic uses are briefly discussed. The ecological significance of halophytes and their role in maintaining biodiversity are briefly discussed. The primary threats to endangered halophyte species are overexploitation, habitat degradation, and the effects of climate change. There is a discussion of in situ conservation initiatives including the creation of protected areas, the restoration of habitat, and the creation of nature reserves and micro-reserves. The long-term preservation of endangered halophytes is examined through ex situ conservation techniques, such as germplasm resource banks. There is an urgency to address the conservation needs of endangered halophytes by implementing a holistic and multidisciplinary approach.
