Synthesis: Prospects of Halophytes in Saline Agriculture to Achieve Food and Livelihood Security

The world is facing a food crisis due to the ever-increasing population and rapidly declining availability of cultivable agricultural land due to anthropogenic interferences. Under the present scenario, we not only require to increase food production per unit area but also need to utilize judiciously all the land and water resources including more than one billion hectares of salt-affected lands (including arid saltpans, salt marshes, coastal saline inundated and degraded mangrove areas) and saline aquifers and seawater for irrigation. Therefore, saline agriculture involving halophytes offers an alternative for increasing agricultural production, especially from degraded salty areas. Research during the last couple of decades has shown that many halophytic species have potential agricultural value and could be grown in these degraded ecologies. Halophytes not only survive in these conditions but also produce considerable biomass. Having the abovementioned facts in mind, the present book is conceptualized. This book is an innovative effort that provides optimism for a future that may change how we grow and protect our food supply under resource-limited conditions, climate change, and land degradation. It covers the vegetation ecology of halophytes including their evolution, classification, historical perspectives, and potential for saline agriculture in the next century. It gives insights into an ecological overview of plant communities, focusing on salt-affected areas of arid and semi-arid regions, salt marshes and mangroves, and their role in agriculture and environmental services. Topics on reproductive ecophysiology, seed germination ecology, seed banks, and endangered halophytes and their conservation methods have been included. The adaptation mechanism among halophytes is discussed in detail along with their morphological, anatomical, ecophysiological, and biochemical adjustments to salinity tolerance. The book explores the potential of halophytes in saline agriculture, focusing on their potential as food and cash crops, water-reducing resources, restoration of saline and waterlogged soils, therapeutic medicinal sources, and domestication for enhanced resilience in arid agroecosystems.
