Analysis of Mechanical and Durability Properties of Ground-Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Stabilized Soil, a Review

摘要

A significant challenge for engineers is building roads, dams, foundations for various structures, and other engineering structures in areas with poor or low-grade soils. Subgrade soils that are unsatisfactory in their current state can frequently be made better using stabilization techniques. Stabilization boosts the tensile strength of the soil as well as the compressive strength. Stabilization of soil is widely being done using materials like fly ash, ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), metakaolin, plastic, etc. Usage of these materials not only attempts to reduce the hazardous environmental effects of these waste materials but also helps in achieving sustainability. This study provides a review over the effect on the engineering properties of the soil in which stabilization has been done using ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) through previous studies done in this field. In majority of research done in this area, different amounts of GGBS like 5%, 10%, and 20% have been added to soil to increase its bearing capacity which has found wide range of applications in the construction field. Apart from these various tests like CBR, tri-axial tests have been conducted to evaluate the enhancement in the strength properties thereby concluding that stabilization of the soil improves its ability to withstand various loads, thereby preventing failures.
