Availability Estimation of 325 MHz, 20 kW Solid State Amplifier Power System for Accelerator

For waste transmutation or nuclear material production, availability of particle beam from an radio frequency (RF) accelerator is its most critical specification in applications like accelerator driven subcritical reactor system (ADS). Large accelerator complex or facility consumes high amount of electrical power this leads to a RF power system with an excellent efficiency and excellent availability as a prerequisite for successful accelerator operation. High power RF (HPRF) system is one of the most critical subsystems of an accelerator facility. For successful operation, Accelerator Driven Sub critical system (ADS) has high requirement of reliability and/or availability. Hence, it needs very reliable accelerator with its constituent reliable sub systems like RF power systems. The recent developments in solid state amplifier (SSA) power systems have led to their high efficiency and high availability. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has designed and developed SSA—20 kW at 325 MHz. This paper discusses the estimation of availability for the SSA (20 kW at 325 MHz) and its sub systems.
