Biosensors in Agriculture: Pioneering the Future of Precision Farming and Sustainability
摘要
The modern agricultural landscape faces a variety of issues, ranging from resource constraint to environmental concerns, necessitating innovative solutions to assure food security and sustainability. In this regard, the use of biosensors in agriculture appears to be a trailblazing frontier, transforming traditional farming practices and opening the way for precision farming. Biosensors which are distinguished by their ability to detect certain biological constituents and convert this information into measurable signals have received substantial attention from a variety of scientific disciplines. From humble beginnings in the late twentieth century to today’s sophisticated precision farming applications, biosensors have played a critical role in building a more sustainable and efficient agricultural future. This book chapter digs into biosensors’ revolutionary significance, highlighting their ability to influence agriculture’s future by enabling real-time monitoring, data-driven decision making, and sustainable crop management. In agriculture, new sensing technologies provide unmatched prospects in optimising resource utilisation, increasing crop output, and reducing environmental impact. This chapter delves deeply into biosensors, from their fundamental principles to practical applications, highlighting their critical roles in resolving the challenges of modern agriculture. To begin, the chapter presents an incisive overview of several biosensor kinds and explaining their distinct characteristics and uses. With a focus on sensitivity and specificity, these biosensors become excellent tools for detecting a wide range of analytes important to agriculture, including nutrients, pesticides, and pathogens. With this intelligence, farmers, and agricultural stakeholders can make educated decisions, moving away from a one-size fits all strategy and towards precision farming customised to the individual demands of each crop and land. Finally, this book chapter emphasises biosensors as key tools in determining the future of agriculture. Biosensors have emerged as crucial tools in the pursuit of global food security and ecologically conscious farming methods due to their increased precision, promotion of sustainability, and economic viability.
