The Love Song of the Underground Men
摘要
Eliot’s poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Dostoevsky’sDostoevsky novel Notes from Underground have in common a feature that has been generally neglected. They are both a love song. PrufrockPrufrock needs to summon his courage for a sort of proposal, while the Underground ManUnderground Man needs Liza’s love in order to escape the underground. If we consider the texts in their poignant call for authentic communication between individuals, then PrufrockPrufrock and the Underground ManUnderground Man become the archetype of those of us who have not heard human voices in the shattering experience of our community. And we drown in the underground once more.
