Women of Modernism: The Meaning is Deferred

With the obvious aim to create tension between the author and the reader, the modernist text by using dramatic monologue, stream of consciousness, indirect speech from an unidentified protagonist to an unnamed interlocutor, aims at producing a shadow of unclearness and un-systematicity. We need to rush to make up for their omission. Virginia WoolfVirginia Woolf, Ezra PoundEzra Pound, and T.S. EliotEliot, T.S. have created female characters that at best represent the modernist ethos. From the protagonists’ perspective, the dichotomy between being and the possibility of being generates a tale in which nothing is more senseless than their freedom and their waiting. Critical intelligence is not enough to redeem humanity from doubt: confusion, estrangement, isolation, and immobility mark indelibly the century’s narrative.
