Rice Husk Ash (RHA) is a by-product of burning rice husks, which are the hard protective coverings of rice grains. When burned in a controlled environment, rice husks yield ash high in silica content, typically around 85–95%. This high silica content makes RHA a valuable pozzolanic material in the concrete industry. The mechanism behind its utility in concrete involves the pozzolanic reaction, where the silica in RHA reacts with the calcium hydroxide produced during the hydration of Portland cement to form additional calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the compound primarily responsible for the strength and durability of concrete.
