Rheology

Rheology, the study of flow and deformation of matter, plays a critical role in understanding the behavior of cementitious materials under various environmental conditions. In cement and concrete, rheology primarily refers to the workability, consistency, and flowability of fresh concrete, crucial during mixing, transporting, and placing phases. The key factors influencing concrete rheology include water–cement ratio, use of admixtures, aggregate size and shape, and environmental factors like temperature and humidity. Severe conditions such as extreme temperatures or high humidity can significantly alter the rheological properties of concrete by affecting the rate of hydration and the viscosity of the cement paste. These changes can result in issues like segregation or bleeding when the concrete is placed or during its initial curing period (Ferraris et al. 2001; Banfill 2006).
