Rebars Corrosion

Rebar corrosion in concrete is a significant issue in civil engineering, primarily under severe environmental conditions such as high humidity, saline environments, and exposure to chemicals. The corrosion process begins when the protective passive film on the steel reinforcement, provided by the alkaline environment of concrete, is disrupted. This can occur due to carbonation, chloride ingress, or both. Carbonation reduces the pH of the concrete, while chlorides directly attack the iron in the steel, initiating the corrosion process. Once the steel begins to corrode, it generates rust, which occupies a greater volume than the steel itself. This expansion creates internal pressures in the concrete, leading to cracking, spalling, and, ultimately, structural weakness.
