Porous Building Material

Porous building materials, such as porous concrete and aerated concrete, are designed with high porosity to promote air and water flow, which offers unique advantages in building applications. These materials are characterized by their ability to absorb and expel moisture effectively, improving the internal climate of buildings and reducing surface runoff in urban environments. The primary mechanism behind porous materials involves the creation of a network of voids within the concrete matrix, achieved by using lightweight aggregates or foaming agents. This structure not only allows for better thermal insulation but also contributes to sound absorption properties. However, the increased porosity can also be detrimental, as it may reduce the structural strength and durability of the material, making it susceptible to compressive and tensile stresses. Moreover, in severe environmental conditions, these materials can suffer from faster degradation due to moisture ingress and freeze-thaw cycles.
