Permeability in the context of cement and concrete refers to the ability of fluid to pass through porous materials. It is a critical property that determines the durability and longevity of concrete structures. The permeability of concrete is influenced by several factors including the water-to-cement ratio, the quality of curing, the presence of voids or cracks, and the types of admixtures used. High permeability in concrete allows more aggressive agents such as water, chlorides, sulfates, and other chemicals to penetrate, which can accelerate processes like corrosion of reinforcement and freeze-thaw damage. Understanding and controlling the permeability of concrete is therefore essential to improving its performance in harsh environmental conditions.
