Alkali–Silica Reaction

Alkali–silica reaction (ASR) is a well-known deleterious chemical reaction in concrete that occurs between the alkaline components of Portland cement and reactive forms of silica found in certain aggregates. When this reaction takes place, it forms a gel that absorbs water and expands, causing significant internal stress within the concrete structure. This expansion can lead to cracking, which compromises not only the structural integrity but also the aesthetic appearance of concrete structures. ASR is particularly aggressive in environments with high moisture availability, which facilitates the ongoing reaction and gel expansion, making it a critical concern for the durability of concrete in severe environmental conditions.
