Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate

Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a process whereby microorganisms such as bacteria catalyze the formation of calcium carbonate in the presence of calcium ions and a carbonate source. This natural phenomenon has been harnessed in the field of construction to enhance the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. MICP contributes to the repair of cracks and increases the material’s resistance to environmental degradation, making it particularly valuable in severe conditions such as those involving high moisture, corrosive chemicals, or freeze-thaw cycles.
