Laterized concrete refers to concrete in which part of the fine aggregates (typically sand) is replaced with laterite, a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminum. This type of concrete is particularly common in tropical regions where laterite is abundantly available. Laterite, being rich in iron oxide, imparts a reddish color to the concrete and possesses good binding properties when used in construction. The use of laterized concrete can improve certain mechanical properties of the concrete and provide economic and environmental benefits due to the utilization of locally available materials, thus reducing reliance on conventional aggregates.
