Framework Silicates

Framework silicates, such as zeolites, are minerals characterized by a three-dimensional, interconnected network of silicon and oxygen atoms that form tetrahedral structures. These materials are highly valued in the construction industry, particularly in the formulation of cement and concrete, due to their unique chemical properties, including high surface area, ion exchange capacities, and molecular sieving abilities. In concrete, framework silicates can act as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that enhance durability and mechanical strength. By participating in the pozzolanic reactions with the calcium hydroxide released during cement hydration, these silicates contribute to the formation of additional calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases, which are crucial for strength and durability. Their use is especially beneficial in improving the concrete’s resistance to aggressive environments, reducing permeability, and mitigating issues like alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and sulfate attack.
