Calcination is a thermal treatment process that involves heating materials to high temperatures in the absence of air or in a controlled atmosphere. This process is critical in the production of cement, specifically in the transformation of limestone (calcium carbonate) into lime (calcium oxide), which is a key ingredient in cement. The calcination of limestone releases carbon dioxide, leaving behind lime, which then reacts with other components to form clinker—the primary material used in cement. This process is essential for creating the chemical and physical properties required for durable and high-strength concrete, especially necessary in severe environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, high salinity, and corrosive atmospheres.
