FNH is a benign tumor-like lesion composed of normal or near-normal hepatocytes, the etiology of which is unclear and may be related to vascular abnormalities and hormonal factors. FNH is second only to hepatic hemangiomas in prevalence and is more common in females. FNH is usually asymptomatic, and a minority of patients may present with epigastric discomfort or pain. Imaging is the main diagnostic tool. Typical FNH shows significant enhancement in the arterial phase, hypointensification in the portal and delayed phases, and delayed enhancement in the central stellate scar. MRI liver-specific contrast-enhanced scanning is valuable in the diagnosis of FNH, which needs to be differentiated from other blood-supplied liver lesions such as hepatic adenomas and hepatocellular carcinomas. Imaging examination combined with clinical features can be effective in diagnosing FNH, but in atypical cases, multimodal imaging or histopathologic examination may be needed to clarify the diagnosis.
