Application of Ultrasound and CT in the Treatment of Liver Trauma

This chapter focuses on the application of ultrasound and CT in the treatment of liver trauma. The liver is located under the right diaphragm, which is susceptible to injuries by external forces or sharp objects, leading to rupture and bleeding, which can cause hemorrhagic shock, cholestatic peritonitis, and secondary infections in severe cases, and even endanger life. Imaging examination is crucial to the diagnosis of liver injury; CT examination can clarify the existence, location, morphology, scope and type of liver injury and also has diagnostic value for the injury of other organs in the abdominal cavity as well as fluid accumulation and hematoma, etc. Enhanced CT can find minor injuries that are easy to be missed by plain scanning. Ultrasonography is fast, efficient, and practical, with good resolution of liver microstructure, but it is difficult to make a clear diagnosis of perihepatic hematoma or a single injury without obvious intrahepatic injury. CT and ultrasonography can complement each other to provide a basis for timely and accurate diagnosis of liver injury.
