Liver fibrosis is an unavoidable stage for various chronic liver diseases, especially chronic viral hepatitis, to develop into liver cirrhosis. There are many pathogenic factors for liver fibrosis, including infectivity, inducing drugs, abnormal lipid metabolism, autoimmunity, hereditary metabolism, vascular disease, etc. Some of the patients may show epigastric discomfort or dull pain, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, nausea, vomition, jaundice, etc., but these symptoms often lack specificity. The dominant pathological change of liver fibrosis is that the extracellular matrices of the liver (collagen, noncollagen glycoprotein, and proteoglycan) are generated in large quantities and deposited in the liver. When liver fibrosis develops into early liver cirrhosis, MRI T2WI image shows grid-like high signals, which represent liver fibrosis. When the development enters the medium and advanced stages of liver cirrhosis, the liver may show typical abnormality of shape, size, outline, and density or signals, and the disease may be complicated with signs such as splenomegaly and portal hypertension, etc., so the diagnosis can be easily made through both conventional CT and MRI. IVIM DWI has high value for quantitative diagnosis of liver fibrosis and can further evaluate staging of liver fibrosis.
