Classification of Game Mechanics: A Brief Review
摘要
Game mechanics play a crucial role in determining a video game’s overall success. In this paper, we examine the literature regarding the use of game mechanics, specifically the type of mechanics and their effect on people and develop a classification of the distinct types of game mechanics with the use of classification theory. Classification is fundamental to encourage the use of a standardized set of game mechanics as it can aid developers in comprehending and producing games that accommodate various user preferences. Additionally, the paper further identified the types of game mechanics under each of the classifications to demonstrate a better understanding. The result of this review provides a categorization of the different types of mechanics and their subcategories based on their common features. Based on the findings, game mechanics are classified into six categories: core, meta, feedback, social, narrative, and aesthetic. Therefore, this paper can contribute to the development of a taxonomy that organizes mechanics into meaningful categories providing structured understanding in identifying similarities, differences, and relationships between mechanics.
