COVID-19 and Food Security: A Short Bibliometric Analysis of Countries with Different Income Levels

Due to the COVID-19 pandemicPandemic, various challenges to food security were faced by nations around the globe. Many studies were conducted to understand the pandemicPandemic’s impact on food security. However, no studies were found to review the literature on the impact of COVID-19 on food security in countries with different income levels. Thus, this chapter aims to present a bibliometric overview of research published on the effect of COVID-19 on food security based on countries’ income level. Related articles and studies were searched on Google Scholar and Scopus focusing on papers that evaluate COVID-19’s impact on food security based on countries’ income level, the mechanism by which COVID-19 affected food security, its impact on food production/supply chain. A total of 31 papers selected from Google Scholar and a sample of 20 articles from Scopus that met the inclusion criteria have been reviewed. This review paper has found that there is a strong association between COVID-19 and food insecurity and its impact can vary based on countries’ income levels. On the one hand, in low- and middle-income countries, COVID-19 impact on food security is mainly due to lockdown and movement restriction policies. On the other hand, its impact on high-income countries’ food security is due to other factors, such as stress and anxiety. COVID-19 and its related restrictions, quarantine, and mental stress have all adversely affected populations quality of life in general and food security in particular.
