Strigolactone in Action- Signalling, Transport, and the Control of Plant Growth and Development

Synthesized from carotenoids, strigolactones (SLs) are plant hormones and signalling molecules that aid root-parasitic plants and symbiotic fungi in identifying their host plants. Additionally, they regulate several developmental processes that alter how roots and shoots behave to adapt to their environment. Through deliberate manipulation of plant growth, SLs also enable adjustments to resource allocation, allowing plants to respond to nutritional deficits. SL initiates signalling networks by interacting with ethylene, auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, and several other plant phytohormones. The present chapter will focus on the origin and evolution of strigolactones, biosynthesis, and signalling mechanism, transportation and control of plant development, interaction of strigolactones with other hormones in the growth, and development of plants and future aspects of strigolactones.
